How has photography connected people?

SOURCE: Pintrest

Seeing photos today is an everyday norm, it’s what you see everyday when you check instagram, snapchat, etc., you see magazines sitting on your coffee table, in the front of stores, and photos all over billboards when you drive. When it is thought about, where did all of this begin? It began when the camera started to become more accessible to everyone. The author, Gretchen Garner, from Jrank, is a photographer who decided to dive into the history of where all of the photographic luxuries we have today.

At the turn of the 20th century, cameras were extremely expensive and it was practically impossible to develop a photo without having hundreds of dollars in equipment and many hours of precise practice. During the 20th century, however, Kodak made it an easy to access hobby that anyone could partake in. When more people were able to excel in the hobby, technology was being developed to be able to share all of people’s different viewpoints of life. Once both of those forms of technology merged, a new thing was created, a way to share one’s photos.

Eventually, magazines took root in everyday society. Sharing fashion, news, gossip, whatever! What had to be on the front and in these magazines were photographs. As different forms of magazines formed, new styles of taking photos for them did, too. For journalistic photography, people wanted a more dramatic and eye-witness point of view. As for people taking photos of models, they wanted to advertise what they were wearing, their makeup, or simply the features of the model. Whatever it was, every form developed a “culture” of its own and grew to affect the culture of people worldwide.

FUTURE RESEARCH: I will continue researching and for my next blog post I will be explaining how photography has informed people in the past and today.

  1. I love the topic that you chose and I think it's very interesting how connected people have become through photography. Instagram and Snapchat are some of the most popular social media apps and it's interesting to see how far photography has evolved. Great job on your blog post!
