Depression. When you hear that word what comes to mind? Many people all over the world go through all different types of depression but, there are probably more people who have overcome depression. There are many ways to become genuinely happy again, it maybe a long road to recovery, but no matter how dark it may get, there is always a way to see the light again. The website Action for Happiness, is a website that gives tips on how to overcome depression, and they state, “practice gratitude: The attitude of gratitude helps you to grow your awareness of the good things in life and overcome the brain's negativity bias, which spots what's wrong before it notices what's right.” When you have gratitude, you realize how fortunate you really are, and that there is good in the world. This website was published, March 4, 2012 by Miriam Akhtar, and it is reliable because it is from a newsfeed and has been published for others to comment on her posts. Another tip this woman suggests, “Learn to be mindful: Mindfulness meditation develops the brain's capacity for positive emotions and helps you to detach from negativity.” When you meditate you practice finding inner peace within yourself and trying to push all your negative energy away replacing it with not just happiness, but most importantly contentedness with yourself and your surroundings.
When you are in depression you can feel like you are drowning and all hope has been lost. Depression can consume one, and change someone’s entire personality when they are in this state. They tend to forget why they are important on this earth, and feel worthless, but Miriam says to get out of this you should, “Discover your strengths: Depression saps energy, undermines your functioning and may highlight a lack of meaning in life. Your strengths act as energizers to support your recovery and provide a clue to a positive direction to take.” Make a list of all the good things you have done or something that made you feel good about yourself, even if it is just staying the extra hour at the gym last year, or reading the whole series of Harry Potter. Depression can be beaten because just like the saying “there is always a light at the tunnel” there is always happiness after depression, but you have to be willing to find it.
