There are many things that a soldier goes through when on the battlefield. Many of these things vary from daily things like eating and sleeping, while other events are rare occurrences, like bathing etc. While many people believe that soldiers were out on the battlefield year round, the soldiers actually had time to go back and spend time with their families or rest back at their home bases. Although this sounds easy, while these soldiers were “resting”, they could also be doing lots of strenuous work at the base, such as construction or completing tons of paperwork. This sort of lifestyle also left soldiers very bored, so any time that they could play games, they would. Such examples of the games are “Skat”, a card game that was played by German Soldiers, or other gambling games like “Crown and Anchor”. While a soldier’s life on the battlefield seems quite average though, they didn’t bathe very often, as it wasn’t seen as a necessity in order to survive.
While many of these tasks seem like everyday things that you normally do on a daily bases, the necessity of these tasks were even more crucial to the success of the armies and outcome of the wars. The Axis army eventually ran out of food, which lead them to their eventual downfall/defeat in 1918.
