Basketball Evolution

How has basketball evolved over time?

The sport of basketball has drastically changed since when it first began in i891. From the uniforms to the rules of the game, the improvements in how the game is played has been revised from old coaches and players.

When people first started playing basketball, Student Resources in Context explains to us how they were so un skilled that they had trouble trying to get the ball in the basket. The ending score of the first basketball game was 9-3. Now, teams usually score more than 60 points. Besides the score of the games, the rules have also evolved, especially in women’s basketball. The rule that surprised me the most was that they used to only be able to hold the ball for three seconds, and once they got the ball they only had three dribbles before they had to pass it. I learned this from a Women’s Basketball article. This is so different from today, where you are allowed as many dribbles as needed. Another part of the game of basketball I found interesting was how the NCAA tournament has been around for such a long time. The first games of the tournament were in 1939, and here we are today, still playing in the same NCAA tournament. However, Student Resources in Context explains to us how the tournament has changed to become what it is today. There used to be only 8 teams allowed to enter, but now there are close to 70. That’s a huge change. The other big aspect of basketball that’s evolved is the player’s uniforms, which is described to us by Cisco Athletic. They started off wearing wool, turtleneck shirts and trousers and now here they are today, wearing long baggy shorts and sleeveless jerseys. Clearly, the different elements of basketball and the game of basketball in general has grown greatly to become the game it is today.
