How Basketball Became Today

When basketball started, it was so new to people that it was difficult for them to put the basketball in the basket. It has evolved so much from when it started. The final scores of the games have even increased by nearly 8 times the amount. Student Resources in Context explains to us how college basketball became a sport. We know they’re reliable because the article, "History of College Basketball," was recently published in 2013 and it’s from a database that supplies students with information.

Basketball started in 1891. It was invented by James Naismith at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. 1895 was when the first college basketball game was played. It was between the Minnesota State School of Agriculture and Hamline College. Each team had 9 players, and Minnesota end up winning with a final score of 9-3. The first college basketball game with only 5 players on each team was between the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa. It took place a year later and Chicago won with a final score of 15-12. After this, many college states started to make men and women’s basketball teams. Later, in 1906, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was created. This was made to protect college athletes and make the regulations and rules for college basketball, and other college sports. The NCAA made 3 classifications/levels: Division I, II, and III. Every college with a basketball team is joined with one of these divisions.

I think it’s crazy how basketball started. The score of the first game was 9-3. Now, the scores of college basketball games are around 65/70 points, more or less. It seems almost impossible to me that games used to be that low of scoring. That shows how much people have improved in their basketball skill and how much people have come to learn about the sport. Also, the NCAA was created in 1906 and it still exists now, as well as the 3 divisions. That was made over 100 years ago, and I think it’s crazy how it still exists today.

Future Research Question: What are some of the first important tournaments, players and coaches?

  1. I learned and thought that it was interesting how much Basketball players have improved over the years, to see such a drastic change in the number of points that they score per game. The overall writing structure is good, but details can be more specified. Otherwise, it is a good post, as it gives relevant information on the topic.
