  • low scoring basketball games were common the author states”Teams that could build an eight- or 10 point lead often held the ball for minutes at a time to prevent an opponent from mounting a comeback”.
  • This strategy of freezing the ball and going into a stall was effective but boring for spectators.”
  • Because of the boring strategy of holding the ball when a team had a 8to10 point lead the National Basketball Association(NBA) established the shot clock in 1954.
  • the shot clock which is 24 seconds long increased the tempo of the game which made it more exciting for people to watch.
  • “The best team in the 1950s and 1960s was the Boston Celtics, who used their fast-break style to outrun opponents and also played aggressive defense to create steals and turnovers.”

In 1891 the beautiful game of basketball was created by James Naismith and he was an at first just an ordinary teacher that worked at Springfield College in Massachusetts. He created it from a soccer ball by dribbling the ball up the court and passing it to an open teammate who would shoot it into a peach basket. At first basketball was not a physical sport until high schools and colleges began playing basketball and the game became physical and referees began to call fouls when players would shoot and dribble. Jumpshots counted as 2 points and free throws counted as 1 point and the players would move the ball around as well they would typically throw 5 to 6 passes to find a good shot. Low scoring games were very common at that time because there was no shot clock so if some teams got a 8 to 10 point lead they would keep moving the ball.until the game ended. Holding the ball for minutes at a time became boring for fans and for commentators so to speed the game up the shot clock was enforced in 1954 and each team got 24 seconds to get a shot off. When the shot clock was enforced coaches began to look for guys who could run with speed and jump high for rebounds and who can get to the rim and score instead guys who could pass the ball or shoot from the outside. The shot clock led to high scoring games and it became entertaining to the fans and to commentators. The team who started the fast pace basketball was the 1950s and 1960s Boston Celtics and they would outrun their opponents and they would play aggressive defense to disrupt their opponent. In 1967 The American Basketball Association(ABA) created the 3 point line to compete with the NBA and the NBA later on picked up 4 ABA teams and added the 3 point line to the NBA this still didn’t change the game that much because it was still a fast paced game and this just gave players an opportunity to get an extra shot.
